Skiing in Narkanda

Narkanda is a well-known place for skiing all around India. More than 10000 people use to come here to do skiing every year. Some of them do it professionally, while some do it for fun only. “Skiing in Narkanda” is one of its major USP’s. There are many National as well as International players from Narkanda, who have made us proud globally.

So, the season of skiing in Narkanda starts in December and it goes up to March. During this time, the whole town gets covered with snow.

DHOMRI SKIING SLOPE

There is a proper skiing slope in narkanda, which is around 700 meters from the main market of narkanda. It is one of the most beautiful places to visit in narkanda. A track of around one kilometer and around 15 meters wide (Don’t quote me on this) covered with big deodar trees and ample forest. The ground at the end of the track, where beginners can learn how to do skiing makes this place even more interesting and exciting.

HOW BEGINNERS CAN START DOING SKIING ??

If you are the one who has never done skiing ever before in your life, then my buddy you are at the right place. We know that Manali is also famous for skiing. But a drawback we face there is that, Manali is very overcrowded. And it is difficult to do skiing there.

So, there are two types of beginners:

One who just want to enjoy skiing for a very short time (say two, three hours of maximum a day).

For such people, it hardly matters whether they are doing it right or not. They just want to have fun. For such people, I recommend renting skiing equipment for a day or on hourly basis. Skiing equipment is easily available on the slope itself.

SECOND TYPE OF BEGINNERS ARE THOSE WHO WANT TO DO IT SERIOUSLY (WHO GOES FOR BASIC SKI COURSE PACKAGE )

Some people do come to narkanda especially to learn the basics of skiing. For such people, I would recommend going for a Basic skiing course package. This package will include skiing equipment, trainer, food, accommodation, and a certificate.

There is a Government Institute in narkanda, where you can enroll. The course can be of 4 days,7 days, 14 days or 21 days. Within this period of time, you will be able to learn the basics of skiing. Obviously, More the time you will spend on the slope, the more you will learn.

Hotel Hatu, which is a government undertaking hotel in narkanda also offers skiing courses. But the fees is quite expensive because of the facilities they will provide.

Many private institutes are also there in narkanda, which can teach you the basics of skiing. But government courses are highly recommended by me.

WHAT ARE THE VARIOUS SKIING EQUIPMENTS ???

We know that we need to have proper gears for the sport we are playing. Skiing is indeed a fun sport but it is quite risky at the same time. Many skiers every year faces major injuries, even I have been on the bed rest for more than a year. (This sentence is not to scare you but to let you know what can happen).

FOR BEGINNERS THE BASIC EQUIPMENT ARE :

Skiing Pair.

Skiing Boots.

Two Sticks.

These are the equipment that you will get initially. As you grow by learning, you will get to know about all the equipment by yourself.

SKIING COURSES IN NARKANDA

As I have mentioned earlier that there are some Government undertaking as well as private skiing institutes in Narkanda. These institutes provide skiing packages according to the duration of the course. You can enroll in any of these institutes according to your comfort.

There are some free Skiing courses also in which you will be charged nothing for anything {including accommodation, food, equipment}, but these courses are for those who come under some specific categories like specially-abled or BPL, etc. It is also not known in advance that when these courses will start.
